Ancient Art, Little Wild Horse Canyon, Tombstone
Moab, Utah
A few years back, my friend Ike and I started an annual trip to Moab over the Thanksgiving holiday. Last year we went to escalante for some canyoneering, so we were excited to do some more this year. We met Laura and her mother in Moab with a few specific
checkmarks in mind. The first being Ancient Art, a large sandstone tower in the fisher towers area. Ancient art is a 4 pitch climb, about 5.8 if you aid on bolt ladders. I chose to try to make the climb free, without pulling on gear and it was about
5.10 or so in a few spots. The climb has it all, face climbing, chimneying, and a wild sidewalk in the sky to the final and wildly exposed 50’ tower. It is a great climb, and one I would happily do again with someone who was looking for a fun intro to
moab tower climbing.
Day 2 we headed for the canyons. Little wild horse, and ding and dang canyons in the San Rafael Swell. We did some hiking and exploring but with recent rains in the area, we were forced to turn around since the canyons were blocked by fairly deep water
passages.
