"Cupid" and Grizzly Peak D

Wind!

Low snow on Loveland pass gave us the opportunity to head over and hike Cupid and Grizzly Peak D. We parked at the summit of Loveland pass and battled winds that would almost knock us down. The hike was straight forward and took us just 2 hours to summit Grizzly Peak D. On our way back, we hiked about halfway over to Sniktau before turning back as the wind was just too strong to continue. We opted to head over to Keystone to ski for a few hours and enjoyed the time at the resort with less wind, trying out our new skis!

Mt Helen

December 2, 2023

Mount Helen 13,186'

Forecast was for wind and snow but Laura still wanted to get outside before we went skiing the next day. She recommended we climb Mount Helen since we had never been there and it was close to the cabin where we were spending the weekend. From the snow blocked lower trailhead, we walked up the road several miles to the turnoff toward Helen and Father Dyer Peak. After just a short ways from the cutoff road we took a sharp left and headed directly up the slopes of Helens East side. Summiting was a posthole adventure and was a constant battle with the wind as a storm was forecasted to blow in later that afternoon.

Postholing up the east ridge of Mount Helen

Upon reaching the summit of Helen, Laura decided she wanted to traverse to Father Dyer Peak as well. Although I was not thrilled about the idea, I went along for the adventure.

The class 4 ridge was snow covered and the wind howling made moving efficiently very difficult.

Fun scrambling along the ridge

After completing the difficulties of the ridge, we chose to bail down snow gullies rather than continue over Father Dyer, hoping to save a bit of time on our descent.

Near the beginning of our descent, we set off this small avalanche.

The first snow we touched broke a 1 foot crown and avalanched down the mountain. We knew we needed to proceed with extreme caution but were mostly committed to descending the mountain this way now. I intentionally triggered two more small avalanches as we descended to the valley floor.

This is the top of another small avalanche that didn't slide all the way down.

Once in the valley, we post-holed and worked through the now blowing snowstorm until reaching the 4-wheel drive road and following that back to our car for a 7.5 hour round trip.

Once the avalanches were cleared, we were able to glissade a little ways.

Windy all day!

Playa Del Carmen Mexico

November 16-23, 2023

Family vacation to Mexico with Laura, Hazel, Mom (Granny) and me.

We stayed at Catalonia Riveria Maya and enjoyed the resort.

We all spent the week relaxing, eating and exploring in Mexico. Hazel played in the sand every day and had a blast building sandcastles and playing on the beach. She swam in the resort pools for hours at a time and is getting really good at swimming!

Laura and I went diving in playa at two different dive sites - Palacio and Cuevitas. We also took everyone over to Cozumel by ferry for the day and went diving at Palancar Gardens and did an awesome drift dive at La Francesca.

The four of us did a daytrip to Tulum and visited the ancient Mayan city ruins, went swimming in Cenote Caracol and snorkeled at Akumal Beach, seeing turtles for Granny's first snorkeling trip ever.

Hazel loves the beach

One section of the beach had rocks that made fun pools to play in.

Tulum

Tulum is on some cliffs above the ocean. There were amazing views looking out across the clear water.

There were lots of iguanas hanging out on the beach and cliffs at Tulum

Fun exploring the cenotes.

We accessed the cenote through a hole in the ground with a set of steps that went straight down.

Getting ready to swim. The water in the cenote was pretty cold.

We were able to swim through several chambers and explore the cave.

We saw several moray eels, like these two.

We even saw this nurse shark.

Lots of colorful fish.

We went kayaking at the resort.

We built lots off sandcastles.

Hazel and Granny

Hazel was intrigued by the cereques.  Apparently they are endemic to this part of Mexico.

Hazel and Granny had so much fun on the beach.

Hazel is always a helper.
