Mount Sherman - 14,043'

Hazel, Laura and I celebrated an early Father’s Day in 11 mile Canyon by climbing the three pitch 5.5 route called the Staircase on Arch Rock. Hazel did absolutely amazing and climbed almost every move on her own.

Hazel took off climbing before I could even get my shoes on

It’s fun watching her progress into a good climber belaying both her and Laura from above to watch them climb together.

Hazel is a helper and wanted to coil the rope by herself

After a quick dip in the river, we barbecued for dinner and then Hazel and I fished off of some of the same rocks that my dad and I used to fish off when I was Hazel‘s age.

We caught two fish and had an excellent day. I wish my dad could’ve been there. He would’ve loved it!

They finally caught a fish

We caught some worms too

After a day of rest at home, we got an early start and headed for Mount Sherman at 6 AM on Sunday, Father’s Day. We parked at almost 12,000 feet on the road to the trailhead and were walking at 8 AM.

Starting our hike at the closed gate on Mount Sherman

The day was beautiful and the sun was shining. Hazel was excited to be out hiking with her parents. After hiking about a mile at the trail, we encountered a slope of snow with steps kicked in, but Hazel marched right up.

Hazel loved climbing the snow

She had a blast climbing the snow and wanted to do more of it. Maybe it’s time for crampons and an ice ax?

We continued on steadily making occasional stops for food or Kit Kats and Hazel marched right up to the top of the 14,000 foot Summit without any complaint.

She said she had a lot of fun and wanted to go back again next weekend.

On the way down we glissaded down some snow slopes, explored some old mining areas and were back at the trailhead with a round-trip time of 5 1/2 hours. It was great to get out and hike on mountains with Hazel for Father’s Day and I’m proud of her for summitting her second 14er!
