Mt. Democrat 14,148'
Laura is back hiking again and has been released for moderate activity by the doctor. She's been missing the mountains while recovering from her broken ankle, so we decided that a short test climb would be fun. We had hoped to park up near Kite Lake and hike the standard trailhead for Democrat but were stopped where the plow had piled a large snow wall in the road. We hiked from here, adding a few miles each direction. The climb went well but was challenging for Laura because of the pain in her ankle. Snow was, for the most a non issue. We wore snowshoes for maybe a mile in the basin near Kite Lake, but in this low snow year, the upper part of the mountain was mostly windblown and hard packed. Laura and I summitted at 11:45 am and enjoyed being on a tall mountain together again!
